A look back at the books I read in 2020, and a quick review of whether it’s worth your time 📚 I won’t be giving a summary of each book, because just google it ‑ it will be much better than mine 🥲
Coming in last...
Why is English Lit so boring 😅 So I thought I should read more novels of the English literature type, but this is not the one. A very slow burn, that never quite sizzles in the way you’re waiting for it to sizzle. Not for me. Rating: ⭐️
To be honest, I only read this because 1. It was free on Prime Reading, and 2. I wanted to see how the original story compares to the movie, because I actually really liked the movie when it came out. Remember Josh Hutcherson? Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Not a must-read, but still a good read...
The best way to describe this book is that it’s a round up of all the things you learned in psychology summed up into tidy, bite size chapters. I took 5 psychology courses in university, so there wasn’t anything new I discovered, but a good refresher on why I enjoy psychology so much. (Terms like cognitive dissonance and recency bias are included, if you know, you know) Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Read this, then watched the comedy movie ‘the interview’ with James Franco and Seth Rogan just to relieve myself from the intensity and gruesomeness of this personal story. Will definitely hit home if you are an immigrant, or have an Asian background. Definitely reminded me the terror that is present day North Korea. You feel a bit helpless at the end of it, but eye opening nonetheless. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A simple tale for kids, but will hit hard if you need a reminder in this self‑centred world to be more generous. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A GREAT thriller novel as of late. Will keep you on your toes and wanting to read more. Reads like a movie in your head. Has an ending that is oh so satisfying. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
If you take away anything from here, definitely read these books...
I LOVE MINDY KALING AND WILL READ ANYTHING SHE WRITES. So witty and funny and down‑to‑earth relatable. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Another children’s book, but why do these hit so hard on your emotional strings?! Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Such a thrilling trilogy. Really great character development that the movies did not do justice‑ couldn’t even get through the first movie. In this case, the book is MUCH better. Currently finishing the last book ‘the girl who kicked the hornets nest’ and I can already tell the story will end in unexpected ways. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Another book that definitely can use a movie remake. The 2000s movie is not up to par if you watch it today. Story literally sucks you into their world. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Dan Brown does it again in this instalment of ‘what next big discovery does Robert Langdon stumble upon solely due to his job position’. Seriously though, another great suspense thriller. If you like the Da Vinci Code, you’ll like this one too. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A classic series I never got around to. LOVED the movies, and finally dived into the books. I must say, it made me love all the characters more and launched my interest in reading books that become movies. Now, I will definitely read the book AND watch the movie. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
